1. Installation
Requirements:
Third- TATW 3.2 require that you first have installed the base 3.0, before patching to 3.2.
- If you have installed a previous version of TATW (2.1 or older), it is recommended to delete the old version before installing TATW 3.2.
(Note that TATW doesn't change any registry settings of your system, so you can also delete the old TATW folder 'Third_Age' manually.)
- TATW 3.2 requires the 'Medieval 2 - Kingdoms Expansion' and is compatible with the official patch 1.04 and 1.05. (One installed campaign of the 'Kingdoms Expansion' is enough)
- TotalWindows Vista, 7 and Windows 8 Users (both STEAM and NON STEAM M2TW Users): Apply these three steps explained in pictures HERE BEFORE installing TATW:
a) Edit Security for you main M2TW folder/ or take Ownership of your main M2TW folder ( Both STEAM and NON STEAM M2TW Users need to do This step )
b) Unhide hidden folders ( NON STEAM M2TW Users need to do This step )
c) Check your VirtualStore folder for Medieval 2 Total War folder, and delete it if you find it there! ( NON STEAM M2TW Users need to do This step )

Installation:
- Install
TATW_3.0_Part1of2.exe &

TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe &
TATW_3.2_Patch.exe
into the default 'Medievall II Total War' directory.
(Normally this is: 'Programs/SEGA/Medieval II Total War')
If you have installed Medieval II into another folder, please select the folder manually.
OBS - TATW_3.1_Patch.exe is not required unless you want to play that version, or install a submod that is made for 3.1. All content in patch 3.1 is replaced or contained in patch 3.2
Best thing to do is:
a) open your main M2TW folder, right mouse click in the Address Bar and press: Copy address as text.

b) And then replace the Default Installation path in ALL THREE/FOUR TATW Installers with this one you have just copied ( Copy address as text ):
just select the Default installation path, right mouse click and press PASTE to replace it with the location of YOUR main M2TW Folder .

- Start the mod with the 'Third Age - Total War' shortcut on your desktop
Additional installation instructions only for Steam users:

nor ..steamsteamappscommon Medieval 2 Total WarThird_Age_3
.. It has to have Medieval 2 Total War at the end as a DESTINATION FOLDER)
2) After installing ALL Third Age files, do not rename Third_Age_3 folder located in your ..steamsteamappscommon Medieval 2 Total War mods folder, use either one of these methods:
Make copy of medieval2.exe located in your main .steamsteamappscommon Medieval 2 Total War folder
Rename this copy to kingdoms.exe
Start your mod through regular Third Age.BAT file ( the one present on your desktop as a Shortcut, or, the one present in your Third_Age_ 3 folder)

1A. Updated Steam install instructions (February 13th, 2017) by Gigantus:
IntroductionThere have been a number of guides and instructions that have been based on old versions of the Steam client and the game itself and out of necessity have been complicated, if not to say convoluted. The goal of this tutorial is to simplify the procedure as much as possible.
The procedure described underneath has been performed on 13th February 2017 with an up to date version of Steam and Medieval II Total War.
DownloadingUse the links provided on this TWC page, for the sake of convenience they are listed below:

Installing
The pathThe 3 parts listed above have to be installed in the sequence they are listed. Start by runningdouble clicking the TATW_3.0_Part1of2 application file to start the installation.
When presented with the installation path you will need to alter it to match your Steam installation. Simply click on the marked button and browse to Steam directory (default is C:Program Files (x86)Steam) and then down to the Medieval II Total War directory as shown in the picture below, then click 'OK'
Now finish the installation and repeat the same path setting for the remaining two installation parts (part 2of2 and Patch). Please note that there is a slight delay at 18% in the first installation: this is due to large files being processed - do not interfere!
Steam specific StuffUnfortunately, the launcher (desktop shortcut to BAT file) does not use the universal batch file method, it will exit with this error message:
https://image.ibb.co/nORmXv/TATW2.jpg

This can easily be fixed by following my tutorial here.
Once you have run that tutorial simply rundouble click the Third Age - Total War desktop shortcut to start the mod.

This tutorial is available as PDF download here.

Third Age Total War 3.1 Patch Download Free

Third Age Total War Free Download

And before you just have to wait for the download to finish, watch this nice trailer by our MasterBigAB: :)
  1. Alright, so for anyone installing this on the STEAM VERSION of the game as of 23-JUNE-2017, here is what you need to know.
  2. First of all, the freaking installation guide they give is just confusing as hell.
  3. You may have done the same mistake as I have and directly installed the 'standalone' 3.2 PATCH that 'does not require any previous TATW installations'. Extremely deceiving.
  4. I'm pretty sure whoever wrote that, actually meant previous TATW patches precisely. But 3.2 is the only damn patch (besides the 3.1 patch that they mention just to confuse you more, because it's not needed!), I have no idea what was in the writer's head. The lay-out and order of the instructions are incredibly damn confusing!
  5. I recommend starting fresh and deleting any previous installations.
  6. *** SO HERE IS A DUMMIES CLEAR GUIDE TO INSTALL THIS MOD FOR STEAM USERS ***
  7. 1. Make sure you have the Base Game installed (Medieval II: Total War) in your Steam Library.
  8. 2. Make sure you have the Expansion DLC installed (Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms) in your Steam Library.
  9. # I also recommend you start up the game if you haven't until now so Steam can install its final utilities for the game and create remaining files.
  10. 3. Now come back to the Mod's web page and browse to the files tab of the mod.
  11. (or just go to this link if you're lazy: http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-total-war/downloads)
  12. II THE DOWNLOADS
  13. 4. Download: Third Age - Total War 3.0 Part 1of2 (1.58GB) # THE BASE INSTALLATION, a.k.a. the mod won't work without this.
  14. 5. Download: Third Age - Total War 3.0 Part 2of2 (1.99GB) # THE BASE INSTALLATION, a.k.a. the mod won't work without this.
  15. 6. Download: Third Age - Total War 3.2 Patch (217MB) # PATCH, a.k.a. the thing that's installed OVER the BASE INSTALLATION which adds updates and fixes to the mod.
  16. III THE INSTALLATION
  17. (make sure you select the STEAM PATH, it may look something like this:
  18. D:a_directorymaybe_another_directorySteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total War)
  19. # I RECOMMEND that you copy (CTRL + C) the path from the installer once you write it/select it for the installation, because you will need it two more times, so you can just paste (CTRL + V) it again.
  20. 8. Install TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe (make sure you select/write the right installation path again).
  21. 9. Install TATW_3.2_Patch.exe (again, make sure the install path is correct).
  22. # you're still here? good! almost done.
  23. # now you should have the mod installed! just a few more MANUAL touches needed for it to launch properly.
  24. IV FINISHING TOUCHES version 2 (simpler and more elegant)
  25. # first check if there is a Third_Age_3 folder in the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmods folder, if it's there then you're good; if there is no Third_Age_3 folder then you chose the wrong path for the mod installation, try finding where you installed it and just copy the folder in the mods folder here.
  26. 10. Now go to your Steam Library and right click Medieval II: Total War, then select Properties, and then click Set Launch Options. In there copy/paste this line: --features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3
  27. 11. Now you can just start the game from Medieval II: Total War (not any of the Kingdoms campaigns) in the Steam Library.
  28. #The Third Age - Total War shortcut on your desktop created by the mod's installer earlier won't work unless you go to SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total WarmodsThird_Age_3 folder and edit with Notepad the Third Age.bat line that has written kingdoms.exe and change it to medieval2.exe, however this is completely optional, you can just delete the shortcut and start the game from the Steam Library or create a shortcut from there and it will work as it should.
  29. # if you wanna go back to playing the original game just remove this line --features.mod=mods/Third_Age_3 from the Launch Options in Steam.
  30. 12. HAVE FREAKING FUN FINALLY!
  31. # a little warning, the Single Player Custom Battle option in-game will crash your game to desktop.
  32. # 12/07/2017, if you experience crashes during the game this might help you, it also somehow fixed my Custom Battle crash:
  33. Go into the modsThird_Age_3data folder and there delete this file: descr_geography_new.db
  34. if crashes still happen then proceed going from the data folder into dataworldmapsbase and there delete this file: map.rwm
  35. This should fix most of the crash issues that the game has, for any other problems try searching on Google, most likely there will be a solution.
  36. You can also check the Reforged version of this mod (mostly focused on the multiplayer aspect): http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-reforged
  37. # IV FINISHING TOUCHES version 1 (less elegant, still works)
  38. 10. Go to the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmods folder. There you should find the Kingdoms expansion dlc folders and the Third Age mod folder a.k.a: americas, british_isles, crusades, teutonic and Third_Age_3.
  39. # if there is no Third_Age_3 folder then you chose the wrong path for the mod installation, try finding where you installed it and just copy the folder in the mods folder here.
  40. Rename any one of the four Kingdoms campaign folders to something like this: americas_originalfolder
  41. # preferably rename a campaign you don't like, because you will not be able to play that campaign until you rename it back to it's original name, in this example, americas.
  42. Now rename the Third_Age_3 folder to americas (or to the name of the folder you previously chose to rename, but in this example I chose americas). Now every time you launch the Americas campaign from the Steam Library it will actually launch the Third Age mod.
  43. 11. Go to the SteamsteamappscommonMedieval II Total Warmodsamericas folder (that should actually be the Third_Age_3 folder but the one you renamed).
  44. Now there, right click Third Age.bat and click Edit or open with Notepad. Then look for the line where you see written: kingdoms.exe and change it to medieval2.exe. After that, save the file and exit.
  45. # for you folks out there that did not find the Third Age.bat file (like me before I wrote this guide), it's because you did not install TATW_3.0_Part1of2.exe and TATW_3.0_Part2of2.exe, so go follow steps 3.-6. and then continue to follow the rest.
  46. 12. HAVE FREAKING FUN FINALLY!
  47. # a little warning, the Single Player Custom Battle option in-game will crash your game to desktop.
  48. # to launch the mod: right click Medieval II: Total War in the Steam Library, then click on Medieval II: Total War Americas (or any campaign that you previously renamed in the mods folder, in this example I used the americas).
  49. # 12/07/2017, if you experience crashes during the game this might help you, it also somehow fixed my Custom Battle crash:
  50. Go into the modsamericasdata folder (americas being actually the renamed Third_Age_3 folder we edited earlier in my example) and there delete this file: descr_geography_new.db
  51. if crashes still happen then proceed going from the data folder into dataworldmapsbase and there delete this file: map.rwm
  52. This should fix most of the crash issues that the game has, for any other problems try searching on Google, most likely there will be a solution.
  53. You can also check the Reforged version of this mod (mostly focused on the multiplayer aspect): http://www.moddb.com/mods/third-age-reforged
